Generating Unstructured Nuclear Reactor Core Meshes in Parallel

چکیده
Recent advances in supercomputers and parallel solver techniques have enabled users to run large simulations problems using millions of processors. Techniques for multiphysics nuclear reactor core simulations are under active development in several countries. Most of these techniques require large unstructured meshes that can be hard to generate in a standalone desktop computers because of high memory requirements, limited processing power, and other complexities. We have previously reported on a hierarchical lattice-based approach for generating reactor core meshes. Here, we describe efforts to exploit coarsegrained parallelism during reactor assembly and reactor core mesh generation processes. We highlight several reactor core examples including a very high temperature reactor, a full-core model of the Korean MONJU reactor, a 1⁄4 pressurized water reactor core, the fast reactor Experimental Breeder Reactor-II core with a XX09 assembly, and an advanced breeder test reactor core. The times required to generate large mesh models, along with speedups obtained from running these problems in parallel, are reported. A graphical user interface to the tools described here has also been developed. © 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. JSweep: A Patch-centric Data-driven Approach for Parallel Sweeps on Large-scale Meshes
In mesh-based numerical simulations, sweep is an important computation pattern. During sweeping a mesh, computations on cells are strictly ordered by data dependencies in given directions. Due to such a serial order, parallelizing sweep is challenging, especially for unstructured and deforming structured meshes. Meanwhile, recent high-fidelity multi-physics simulations of particle transport, in...
متن کاملEfficient Parallel Generation of Partitioned , Unstructured Meshes
In this paper we introduce a method for generating unstructured meshes in parallel which are partitioned in a \good" way. When solving a partial dierential equation on a parallel distributed memory machine, the mesh should be decomposed so that the communication requirement of the numerical solver is minimised and also the amount of work to be performed on each processor is approximately equal....
متن کاملUnstructured Meshes and Finite Elements in Space Plasma Modelling: Principles and Applications
This chapter describes the general principles of unstructured mesh generation in two and three dimensions, together with the use of finite elements in modelling space plasmas. Particular attention is given to the requirement of generating meshes that are aligned along magnetic field lines, in order to properly capture the strong anisotropy of magnetised plasmas. Example results are given in 2D ...

Generating numerical solutions to the eikonal equation and its many variations has a broad range of applications in both the natural and computational sciences. Efficient solvers on cutting-edge, parallel architectures require new algorithms that may not be theoretically optimal, but that are designed to allow asynchronous solution updates and have limited memory access patterns. Thermal hydraulics of nuclear reactor as a basis of reactor safety has a very important role in reactor design and control. The thermal-hydraulic analysis provides input data to the reactor-physics analysis, whereas the latter gives information about the distribution of heat sources, which is needed to perform the thermal-hydraulic analysis. In this study single heated channel model as a very f...
